Eleven Members of the We Are Invictus Community Complete the Roma-Ostia Half Marathon

The Invictus Games Foundation recently took a trip to Rome as part of our Beyond the Games programme, as we funded 11 members of the We Are Invictus community to take part in the Roma-Ostia Half Marathon.

The Roma-Ostia Half Marathon is billed as the world’s fastest half marathon and attracted 10,000 participants on March 3rd, 2024.

The half marathon organisers kindly donated race spaces to the Invictus Games Foundation (IGF) and allowed the 11 members of the We Are Invictus community to lead the race, giving them a 15-minute head start before the professional runners took to the course.

Five of the 11 participants were from Ukraine and through the generous sport of the Monster Energy Cares Foundation, we were able to get them to Rome and support their continued recovery journeys with the power of sport.

Liam Wakefield is a member of the We Are Invictus community from the UK and ran the half marathon in an incredible 02:01:27.

“This was a really incredible opportunity and I feel absolutely amazing having run the Roma Ostia Half Marathon, doing this alongside the fantastic Invictus Games Foundation and the other participants from around the world, especially the Ukrainians.

"I’m over the moon with my performance today and just to be able to continue to use the power of sport has really helped me overcome some challenging times. I love being involved as much as I can and championing this cause as much as I can.

“It was a wonderful privilege to be involved,” Liam concluded after completing his second race with the IGF in the last 6 months, as he took part in our Invictus Adventure to Jordan to learn about water sustainability and race through the deserts.

Laura Duchi, Race Director of the RomaOstia Half Marathon said: “We are very happy and satisfied, as every year the organisation was impeccable. We will see you on October 20th 2024, for the Rome Half Marathon”.

The Invictus Games Foundation has spaces available for the inaugural Rome Half Marathon, you can apply through the We Are Invictus platform.

The Rome Half Marathon is the first of its kind within the historic city limits of Rome and the route will take in sights like the Coliseum, St Peter’s Square, and the Stadio Olimpico.

The We Are Invictus platform is a closed platform for members of the international WIS community that provides access to everything the IGF offers Beyond the Games.
