The Invictus Games Foundation is delighted to confirm the appointment of Joanna Roper CMG and David Richmond CBE as new Trustees to our Board. Both bring exceptional leadership experience from the fields of veteran support, politics, diplomacy, and international relations: strengthening our global mission to support the recovery and rehabilitation of international wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans (WIS) through sport.
Joanna Roper brings expertise in international relations, diplomacy, and government policy, having held numerous senior roles within the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). She has served as British Ambassador to the Netherlands, and previously as the FCDO’s Special Envoy for Gender Equality. Joanna will be bringing skills in international cooperation and cross-cultural engagement to the board, vital to our mission and to our growing international network.
Joanna Roper CMG said: “I am honoured to join the Invictus Games Foundation and support its global community of recovery. The work of the Foundation exemplifies the best of international collaboration, resilience, and human spirit. I look forward to contributing to its next chapter.”
David Richmond, who is currently serving as Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, is a retired British Army colonel with a distinguished 26-year military career. He was one of the most senior British Officers wounded in Afghanistan and has since become one of the UK’s foremost voices for the veteran community.
He previously led the UK Government’s Office for Veterans’ Affairs, where he worked across departments to enhance mental health, housing, and employment outcomes for veterans. His lived experience and leadership will be a crucial voice on the board from the community we serve.
David Richmond CBE FRSA said: “It is a privilege to join the Invictus Games Foundation as a Trustee. Having seen first-hand the challenges many face after service, and having benefited from the sporting opportunities the Foundation offers, I believe strongly in the power of sport, purpose, and community in rebuilding lives. I look forward to supporting the Foundation's continued impact around the world.”
The Invictus Games Foundation, established following the first Invictus Games in London in 2014, supports international wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women through sports and year-round programmes. The addition of David Richmond and Joanna Roper to the Board reflects our commitment to veteran welfare and global partnerships.
Lord Allen, Chair of the Invictus Games Foundation’s board of trustees, commented: “We are incredibly fortunate to welcome both David and Joanna to our Board. David’s leadership in veterans’ welfare and Joanna’s experience in international diplomacy are invaluable assets as we look to expand our reach, deepen our impact, and continue to support the recovery journey of our global Invictus Community.”
Rob Owen OBE, CEO of the Invictus Games Foundation, added, “The breadth of experience that Joanna and David will bring to the table is a strong addition to our board. As we have recently developed our new strategy for the next ten years, this is an exciting time for the Foundation and our international mission.”
