Running with Purpose: Taking on the London Marathon for the Invictus Games Foundation
By Jo Evans

Running the London Marathon has always been on my bucket list, but this year, it means so much more. I’m not just running for myself—I’m running to support the Invictus Games Foundation, a cause that inspires me every day.

The Invictus Games Foundation is more than just a sports organisation. It’s a community that empowers international wounded, injured, and sick (WIS) servicemen and women through the power of sport. It helps them rebuild their lives, restore confidence, and find purpose after injury or illness. Seeing the resilience and determination of the Invictus Games competitors is truly humbling. Their stories remind me of the strength of the human spirit, and I couldn’t think of a better reason to lace up my running shoes and hit the road.

I recently started running again after going through numerous physical and mental health setbacks, and I am loving it. The longer the run, the better it seems to be for my wellbeing—especially once I get past the 20km mark. I’m by no means quick, but focusing on running and nothing else does wonders for my head. It’s like everything else falls away, and it’s just me and the road.

Training for the marathon has been a journey of its own—early mornings, long runs, and plenty of moments where I questioned my sanity! But every time I felt like giving up, I thought of the Invictus Community and the challenges they’ve faced and overcome. It’s their spirit that keeps me going, step after step.

I’ve always watched the London Marathon and it’s seems like such a welcoming, inclusive, and positive atmosphere.

One of the biggest challenges for me will be coping with the crowds. I struggle with them, but running has been beneficial for my ongoing recovery and wellbeing. Taking part in an event like this will really put that to the test and—hopefully—prove to be a turning point.

Running through the streets of London will be unforgettable. I know it’s going to be tough, but I also know that with the support of my friends, family, and the Invictus community, I can make it to the finish line. Every mile will be worth it, knowing that I’m raising funds to support those who have given so much.

I hope you’ll join me in supporting the Invictus Games Foundation. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference. Together, we can help veterans and WIS personnel continue their journeys of recovery and resilience. Invictus Games Foundation: Jo Evans
