Chasing a Dream: Running the London Marathon for the Invictus Games Foundation
By Andrii Kucher
Running has always been a passion of mine. Before my injury, I ran regularly, and one of my dreams was to complete a marathon. Now, as I stand on the brink of making that dream a reality, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement and motivation.
In Ukraine, I frequently participate in sporting events for my recovery. The spirit of the Games resonates deeply with me—not because of the sports results, but because of the psychological motivation they provide to veterans. It’s not just about competing; it’s about finding strength, rebuilding purpose, and proving to ourselves that we are more than our injuries.
When some of my fellow veterans participated in the London Marathon 2024, their stories and enthusiasm fuelled my own desire to take on this challenge. They spoke about the vibrant atmosphere, the supportive crowds, and the sense of achievement that came with crossing the finish line. Their experiences made me realize that now is the perfect time to fulfil my dream.
Every part of the marathon will hold significance for me—from the starting line in Blackheath to the finish on the Mall. Every step will be a testament to resilience and determination. Running through London this weekend, a city so full of life and history, will be an incredible experience in itself—a way to explore while pushing my limits.
Physical activity is crucial for recovery after an injury, and running has become a key element of my own rehabilitation plan. As the head of the Union of the Wounded "Strong 300," I support other injured soldiers with legal matters and rehabilitation. In some ways, I am a motivator for many veterans—showing that with enough willpower, any goal is attainable.
But this marathon is more than just a personal journey. It’s an opportunity to remind the world that the war in Ukraine is ongoing. Running the London Marathon is my way of standing up, speaking out, and proving that hope and determination can carry us through the toughest of times. Thank you to the Invictus Games Foundation for the chance to take part in this iconic event. I hope to make my fellow veterans proud and demonstrate that recovery, resilience, and dreams can be pursued, no matter the challenges we face.
