Jonny Huntington was commissioned into the British Army in 2014, but just weeks later suffered a devastating stroke that left him paralysed down his left side and with permanent brain damage.
His recovery required him to relearn basic movements such as walking while managing long-term mobility problems and chronic neuro-fatigue.
Sport became a major part of his rehabilitation, taking him from ultra-endurance running to increasingly demanding challenges and eventually into the Invictus Community.
In 2024, Jonny became the first stroke survivor to complete a solo, unsupported ski expedition to the South Pole, covering 911 kilometres in 45 days while pulling a sled weighing more than 90kg.
He faced temperatures as low as -40°C and skied for up to 11 hours a day without external assistance or resupply.
His expedition was the culmination of years of preparation, including ultra-endurance races and polar training, and demonstrated what can be achieved while living with the lasting effects of a serious neurological injury.
Through his challenges and fundraising, Jonny continues to use sport to raise awareness and support military charities, while showing through his own recovery that an injury does not have to define what comes next.
